What Does “Grounding” Mean?
Grounding is about coming back to the present
When emotions become intense, your attention can become pulled towards difficult thoughts, memories or fears. Grounding refers to simple ways of reconnecting with what is happening in the present moment. That might involve noticing your surroundings, your breathing, physical sensations, sounds, movement, or what you can see or touch.
The aim is not to force yourself to feel calm. It is to give yourself something steady and immediate to focus on.
This guide is not therapy
It is an educational, practical resource, not a treatment. It is not a diagnosis, a clinical assessment, trauma treatment, emergency support or a substitute for individual therapy.
Some people may find grounding techniques useful. Others may prefer different approaches. If an exercise feels uncomfortable or unhelpful, you do not need to continue with it. Your response matters.

About Genovieve
A resource from Genovieve Feasey
I am Genovieve Feasey. I work with adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, difficult relationships and other emotional challenges. My approach is trauma-informed and integrative. That means I pay attention to the person in front of me rather than expecting everybody to respond to the same technique. I created this guide as a simple resource you can use independently.
Not Ready for Therapy?
That is okay
You do not need to book therapy simply because you are interested in understanding yourself better. You might read the guide, explore the journal, learn about trauma, read about EMDR, look at what therapy involves or come back later. The next step remains your choice.
