EMDR Therapy in Kent
Looking for an EMDR therapist in Kent?
You may already know that you are interested in EMDR. Or you may simply know that something from the past continues to affect your present life. You might notice:
- Difficult memories
- Strong responses to reminders
- Feeling constantly alert
- Anxiety
- Avoidance
- Difficulty trusting
- Emotional overwhelm
- Feeling disconnected or numb
- Relationship patterns that keep repeating
- Physical stress responses
You do not need to decide whether EMDR is the right therapy before contacting me. We can begin by understanding what is happening now.
What Is EMDR?
A structured approach used within trauma therapy
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is one of the main approaches I use when working with trauma. Parts of EMDR may involve bringing aspects of an experience to mind while using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements. You are not expected to describe every detail of a difficult experience. Preparation and assessment may come before processing work.
Do We Start EMDR Immediately?
Not necessarily
Starting trauma therapy does not automatically mean beginning EMDR processing in the first session. We first consider:
- What you are experiencing
- What you would like help with
- Your current circumstances
- How you respond when distressed
- What currently helps
- What support you have
- What feels manageable
- Whether EMDR appears appropriate
You remain involved in decisions about the pace.
Other Approaches I May Use
Therapy is adapted around the person
My approach is integrative. Depending on what you need, I may draw from:
Somatic Body Psychotherapy
Pays attention to physical sensations and patterns that may accompany emotional experiences.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT can help explore relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
DBT-Informed Skills
These may support emotional regulation, distress tolerance and communication.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy may form part of the work for some people where appropriate.
Counselling and Psychotherapy
Talking therapy can provide space to explore experiences, relationships, patterns and emotions more broadly.
You do not need to decide which approach you need before getting in touch.
Who I Support
People come to trauma therapy for different reasons
You may be looking for help because of:
Clinical Area
PTSD and complex trauma
When past experiences continue to affect your sense of safety, emotions or everyday life.
Clinical Area
Childhood trauma and attachment
When earlier experiences appear to affect trust, boundaries, relationships or self-worth.
Clinical Area
Anxiety, panic or phobias
When fear or anxiety starts shaping decisions and everyday activities.
You may also notice difficult relationship patterns around trust, conflict, closeness, boundaries or communication, or experiences that are hard to explain. You do not need a diagnosis or a clear label before asking for support. We can begin with what feels difficult now.
You Set the Pace
Trauma therapy does not mean telling me everything immediately
There may be experiences you do not feel ready to talk about. That is okay. You decide what you share and when. If something becomes too much, you can say:
- “Can we slow down?”
- “I do not want to discuss that today.”
- “I need a break.”
- “Can we come back to this another time?”
- “I do not understand.”
- “That does not feel helpful.”
Your response matters.
